Abstract The electrochemical performance and safety of LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (NCA) were improved by LiFePO4 (LFP) using a facile way, and the effects of LFP were investigated. Compared to the pristine NCA, 20 wt% of LFP enhanced the electrochemical performance and safety by decreasing the stress value by about 62.9% at 1C and moving the exothermic peak to the high-temperature zone by about 16.8 °C. The discharge capacity and capacity retention ratio were improved by 19% and 17% at 1C, respectively. The structure changes at different charge states and enhanced mechanisms were discussed. The facile strategy is attractive for the applications of energy materials.
