Abstract Recent studies reported on the synthesis and characterization of several bulk crystals of layered metal triselenophosphites MPSe3 (M = transition metals). In these works characterization was performed via a combination of different bulk- and surface-sensitive experimental methods accompanied by DFT calculations. However, the critical examination of the available experimental and theoretical data demonstrates that these results do not support the conclusions on the electrochemical sensing and energy applications of studied triselenophosphites. These conclusions are made without any relation to the age of discussed data and possible recent progress in experimental and theoretical approaches.
