Abstract Defect plays a key role in the optical properties of silver thin films. Herein, we introduced the oxygen vacancy defects by laser modification and fabricated the Ag/ir-MoOx thin film. The effects of ir-MoOx on the structure and optical properties of Ag thin films were investigated. We found that laser irradiation and effective silver trap will introduce numerous oxygen vacancy defects. The nonlinear absorption response of Ag/ir-MoOx was significantly improved compared with that of the single layer Ag. The increased concentration of oxygen vacancies in the composite film will promote the rate of charge transfer and enhance the nonlinear saturation absorption.
