Abstract With the combination of the time and space waveform optimization method, the optimal waveforms of the positive and negative inhomogeneous 3-color laser pulse have been found to produce the high order harmonic spectra. The results have been explained by the time-space profiles of the laser pulse and the time-profile of the harmonic emission process. Finally, the ultrashort isolated 40 as pulses can be obtained when the harmonics are properly superposed.
