Abstract We studied the magnetocaloric effect in a single crystal GdTiO3. Single crystal GdTiO3 had a second order phase transition from a paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic state at 33 K. The maximum entropy change of - Δ S = 0.10 J/cm3 K was observed in a 5 T field at the transition temperature. A small anisotropy was found in the magnetization and specific heat in low magnetic fields. The magnetization showed no hysteresis. Temperature dependencies of entropy, which are important for analyzing the refrigeration cycle, were calculated from the magnetization and specific heat measurements. These results indicate that GdTiO3 has the potential for applications as a magnetic refrigerant for hydrogen liquefaction.
