Abstract By means of momentum source term method and additional specific heat capacity method, the thermal characteristics of waxy crude oil pipeline during its shutdown are investigated by the numerical simulation. The quantitative effects of crude oil viscosity, specific heat capacity, pipeline diameter and insulation thickness on the thermal characteristics of waxy crude oil pipeline during shutdown are studied. The results show that pipe diameter has a great influence on the average temperature drop rate, and the average temperature drop rate decreases significantly with the increase of pipe diameter. The thickness of insulation and the viscosity of crude oil have a great influence on the oil temperature variance. As the thickness of insulation layer increases or the viscosity of crude oil increases, the oil temperature variance increases significantly. The viscosity of crude oil has a great influence on the average velocity, and the average velocity decreases significantly with the increase of the viscosity of crude oil.
