Highlights • Systematic investigation of subcomponents of reading (prelexical, orthographic, phonological, and lexico-semantic).• Region of interest analysis based on a meta-analytic (in the present version meta is written in italic) map of the core reading system in children.• Task comparison showed important role of occipito-temporal and frontal systems in children.• Results favor the idea of an interactive reading network in children.
