Abstract Linear and star triptycene-based porous polymers regulated by diarylethenes were constructed via Pd (0)-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction, respectively. Both triptycene-based porous polymers performed reversible photochromism in solid state but exhibited distinctive solvent-dependent photochromism in solution. Their surface area and porous properties were further analyzed by nitrogen sorption isotherms. Results showed that the specific surface areas and total pore volumes of the two polymers can be reversibly tuned by adjusting the open- and the closed-ring of diarylethene upon irradiating with UV and visible light. These distinctive properties have potential applications in the photo-switched gas adsorption and the probe of chloride solvents.
