Abstract A series of new photochromic tetraarylethenes and their oxides have been designed and synthesized conveniently. When alternately irradiated by ultraviolet and visible light, their solution, solid powder and PMMA films can all switch reversibly between colorless and rare yellow. The typical aggregation-induced emission effect in H2O-THF mixed solution was investigated in detail. It was found that these tetraarylethenes and their oxides exhibited different fluorescent changes in different media during photochromism. These compounds and the molecular designs are expected to provide some new options for the application of fluorescent molecular photoswitches based on simple structures.
