Abstract Recently an apartment is the most popular type of accommodation owing to lack of real-estate, convenience, and other economic advantages. Most of apartments among the total dwellings expected to keep increasing in South Korea. Influenced by this trend, recent apartment complexes focus on the eco-friendly type. Various eco-friendly landscape structures such as eco-streams or ponds have been built in apartment complexes. Several integrated design criteria were suggested with consideration of the waterway and its installation. However, quantitative consideration based on engineering perspective has not yet been developed properly. Consequently, many facilities were constructed for landscape purposes are being abandoned without proper care owing to difficult and costly maintenance. Therefore, for long-term operation and maintenance of eco-streams, it is necessary to establish a design method by an evaluation based on flow pattern analysis. In addition, most of the existing studies focused solely on stagnant water bodies such as eco-ponds or artificial wetlands. Application of those studies is not possible with re-circulating open channel systems with flowing water. Herein, we analyzed flow patterns in the meandering part, crossing part, and the pond for the outlet of the channel with two types of numerical analysis methods. Two-dimensional flow patterns were analyzed with respect to the bed roughness and meanders and 3-D flow patterns were also analyzed with the Ansys Fluent for the location of the outlet. And we propose design criteria for the re-circulating open channel system.
