Abstract Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation is of great significance for the design, operation and control of power systems. To improve the efficiency of EMT simulation, the shifted-frequency (SF)-based EMT simulation was proposed in the literature. The trapezoidal (TR) method was widely used for the numerical integration of the SF-based EMT simulation. However, the TR method may result in sustained numerical oscillations for a sudden change of a variable. To resolve this problem, this paper uses the two-stage singly diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta (2S-SDIRK) method for the numerical integration of SF-based EMT simulation. First, the SF-based modeling of power system dynamics is given. Then, the numerical integration of the SF-based EMT model by the 2S-SDIRK method is elaborated. Test results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
