Abstract The electrochemical oxidative regeneration method is proposed for the sulfur poisoned solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in this study, and successfully applied to the sulfur poisoned La0.75Sr0.25Cr0.5Mn0.5O3-δ (LSCrM) anode of SOFC. Electrochemical oxidative regeneration method can transport oxygen ions to anode from cathode in inert gas at constant current, and further clear the sulfur poisoned products (S8, MnS and La2O2S) which are produced in dry H2 that contained 50 ppm (v) H2S contaminant, in addition, the evenly distributed MnO catalytic nanoparticles can be generated in regeneration process. The electrochemical performance of the SOFC with the sulfur poisoned LSCrM anode can be fully recovered in a short time (15 min), and interestingly enough, the repeated sulfur poisoning and electrochemical oxidative regeneration process do not cause a sharp deterioration in electrochemical performance of the SOFC. The sulfur poisoning and electrochemical oxidative regeneration mechanism of the SOFC with LSCrM anode are evaluated in detail.
