Abstract Electric sparks can ignite fires, initiate explosions, shock humans. These discharges release energies through very complex dynamic processes. The effects of changing energy (capacitance and voltage) and electrode parameters on spark discharge characteristics are investigated. A multi-energy high-voltage ignition system is built. Results show that the spark discharge energy by voltage is more stable than changing the energy by capacitance. The breakdown characteristics of electrodes are revealed under different electrode parameters by the field strength distribution of the electrode. The energy utilization efficiency of large electrode gap is about 5.55% higher than that of small electrode gap.
