Abstract Over the recent years, the use of renewable energy has been increasing in an attempt to solve environmental problems such as air pollution and climate change. These types of energy have significant value as clean, low-carbon energies, but there are issues regarding energy density and durability. This research aims to provide a solution to these problems by developing a technology that can convert carbon dioxide into chemical energy. A study was carried out in an attempt to understand how well the microwave-induced conversion technique performs when using carbon receptors. It was found that applying a microwave heating conversion technique on bio-carbon materials (i.e., char, activated carbon) resulted in a maximum conversion of 96% for carbon dioxide, with the operation remaining stable and continuous for more than 4 h. In case studies investigating the characteristics of carbon-CO2 gasification, the CO2 conversion and heating value of the product gas was found to increase when the gasification temperature was increased and the amount and temperature of the feed gases was decreased. Char was found to be a better carbon receptor than active carbon for the conversion of CO2.
