Abstract Pakistan is currently facing dual problem; one is energy shortage and other is waste disposal. This study focuses the assessment of waste to energy technologies in order to develop integrated model of waste management for energy recovery in the country. For characterization of waste, the samples have been collected by adopting standard methodology. Various scenarios are developed according to the nature of waste components for different waste to energy technologies assessment. For developing integrated model, further four scenario and six treatment options by combing different waste scenarios and technologies respectively are prepared and examined through environment, economic and energy assessment. The results of study suggest that the scenario option-B (putrescible, non-putrescible and recyclable components including glass and metals), if treated with treatment option-3 (anaerobic digestion, gasification and material recovery facility) would give highest energy production (4,772 MWh/day) and most economic benefit (12, 31, 137 USD/day) as well as environment friendly option by giving highest avoidance emissions (2, 747 tCO2/day) as compared to other scenarios. The findings of present study recommend that scenario option-B, if treated with treatment option-3 would play a significant role as an integrated model of waste management for energy recovery in Pakistan.
