Abstract In the study of fracture mechanics, various techniques are used to determine the parameters that characterize the crack-tip stress field. What these techniques obtain is the full-field displacement distribution and then, the parameters are extracted through the so-called over-deterministic method. This method has some metrological limitations: it does not provide the uncertainties of the measurements, it assumes that the observations are independent and have the same accuracy, and its results are very sensitive to the misalignment of the coordinate axes. In this paper it is shown that the Generalized Least Squares by Lagrange Multipliers method overcomes all that limitations.
