Abstract This paper proposes a practical method that estimates parameters of synchronous generator transient models from measurements using a constrained minimization approach. The generator is represented by a set of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) and its solution is achieved by means of a minimization of the norm of algebraic equations subject to differential equations constraints. The proposed approach overcomes solvability problems of DAEs models. The method is robust regarding initial parameter guesses, requires no disconnection of the generator from the grid and uses measurements commonly available in power plants, such as generator terminal voltage and current, field voltage and rotor speed. Mechanical and electrical parameters of the generator are estimated separately and the load angle variable is also estimated. The method was tested with measurements obtained from both simulations and actual measurements obtained from a small power system designed in laboratory.
