Abstract The subject paper presents a variational approach for determining the sensitivity of element modal strain energy (MSE) [1] that differs from the direct algebraic method proposed by Yan and Ren [2]. The essential equivalence of the variational approach and the direct algebraic method is proved in this discussion. Based on basic matrix manipulation, it can be seen mathematically that both approaches can lead to the same MSE sensitivity formula. This discussion also clarifies the illustration on overcoming the ill-condition limitation of Yan and Ren's method in the subject paper as well as its numerical verification are insubstantial.
