Psoriasis pathogenesis includes immune activation and oxidative damage. Tropaeolum majus is a plant rich in antioxidant anthocyanins. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Tropaeolum majus extracts on psoriasis-like wounds. The ethyl acetate, ethanolic and hydroethanolic extracts were obtained by maceration. Their anthocyanins content was determined by differential pH method. Mice were allocated in normal and negative control groups (n=12) treated with 10% glycerol and groups receiving extract (50 mg/mL). Topical treatments were daily (5 days). Later, half of each group was euthanized to collect skin for analyzes of TNF-α, IL-1β, lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation and reduced glutathione (GSH). The other half was kept to determine the time for wounds’ clearance. Anthocyanins concentration was 0.6 ± 0.1; 6.9 ± 0.9 and 10.9 ± 0.6 mg/g in ethyl acetate, ethanolic and hydroethanolic extracts. Wounds severity was reduced by 35% and up to 45% by the ethanolic and hydroethanolic extracts, as well as the time for clearance. Concentration of TNF-α and IL-1β was normalized by these extracts, along with lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation. Extracts caused recovery of GSH, mainly the hydroethanolic one. The antipsoriatic activity was associated with antioxidant action.
