Abstract This paper investigates whether family firms controlled by married couples have better innovation performance. Based on the Chinese patent data during 2008∼2016, I find that married couples have positive impacts on firm innovation output for family firms in China. My identification strategy is based on matched sample analysis. I further find that this positive effect is more pronounced in well-governed firms.
