Abstract This article presents a brief history of the establishment and evolution of the Brazilian DNA database the Rede Integrada de Bancos de Perfis Geneticos (RIBPG) and discusses the legislation that regulates the storage of genetic profiles of individuals in criminal cases in Brazil. Also, the article aims to offer a non-technical summary - with reference to international comparative information – and to discuss the developments in historical and political context.
