Abstract STR nomenclature is an active topic of discussion in forensic genetics. Attractive features of a nomenclature to be used in routine casework might include a) compactness, b) easy to communicate verbally, and c) universal in the sense that all users will get the same label for the same sequence. When applied to mixed-DNA casework, a nomenclature must be capable of labeling artifacts as well as alleles. Artifacts in MPS are more diverse than artifacts in CE and include sequence types that arise from rare and unanticipated sequencing errors. The sequence identifier (SID) labeling method offers a practical solution to this challenge.
