Highlights Air pollution is responsible for a wide variety of health problems and 4.2 million premature deaths annually and is a health risk even in “low” pollution areas. Air pollution exposures can be reduced by using portable room air purifiers, wearing face masks, recirculating automobile cabin air, using air conditioning, and by closing windows. Clinicians can determine appropriate interventions to reduce personal exposures by following the algorithm developed in Figure 3.
