Abstract In this study, initially, the main urban elements in the physical structure of traditional Iranian cities, the characteristics of those elements, and their functions are investigated to improve urban livability with regard to religious, economic, residential, public, political and administrative spaces. Then, these functions are compared with those of the main elements in the contemporary cities of Iran, and their difference is detected. This study also conclude by emphasizing that urban planners and designer should consider the evolution of the city in the period of time and strategies learned from the past should be considered at the time of urban planners and designer. Therefore, through the investigation of the elements constituting traditional Islamic cities in Iran and the maintenance of these elements in the space of current cities, it is possible to find ways to make the environment be responsive to contemporary needs while it keeps its continuity and integrity with the historical structure and spaces.
