James H. Youngblood I am frequently asked about volunteer opportunities available for our members. It is a question that I encourage because the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) attributes much of its success to work done by member volunteers. Volunteering is a unique way to get more involved with HRS, strengthen communities, connect with peers, and solve problems. It is also a catalyst for professional growth and provides a leadership path for members. Utilizing your specific skill set and talents also means improving the lives of patients and their families, which is the ultimate reward. Volunteering for various organizations has greatly influenced my life and career. Incorporating service into my everyday life in order to give back to my professional community has given me a true sense of pride and satisfaction. And through giving back to those organizations that I pursued, I was given the opportunity to serve in leadership positions and build skills that enhanced my career. I was able to apply what I learned to my profession. It wasn’t always easy, and I had to start small and work my way up the volunteer ranks. To this day, I attribute much of my career path, management style, and success to the volunteer work I have done and continue to do. I’m excited to report that HRS has seen an increase in interest from members to serve in a volunteer capacity. As subject matter experts, our members are a valued resource and their input and involvement is crucial to the field. How does the Society develop more meaningful volunteer opportunities that contribute to the organization’s efforts to end death and suffering from heart rhythm disorders? It’s a daunting issue and an area of focus for HRS leadership and staff. There is important work to do, and the organization must develop more opportunities to utilize the enormous talents and knowledge of the membership. It must also revisit the appointment and nomination process to ensure that it is seamless and transparent. This is an issue being tackled by a
