Abstract Eight new coordination complexes, namely, [Co2(Dcph)2(Him)4] (1), [Co(Dcph)(dmbipy)]n (2), [Co(Dcph)(1,3-bix)]n (3), [M(Dcph)(1,2-bix)]n [M = Co (4) and Cd (5)], [Co2(Dcph)2(4,4′-bibp)(H2O)2]n (6), {[Cd(Dcph)(4,4′-bpy)(H2O)2]·2(H2O)}n (7), {[Cd(Dcph)(1,3-bix)] H2O}n (8) have been synthesized and characterized (H2Dcph = 4,5-Dichlorophthalic acid, Him = imidazole, dmbipy = 5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipiridine, 1,3-bix = 1,3-bis(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)-benzene, 1,2-bix = 1,2-bis(imidazole-1-ylmethyl)-benzene, 4,4′-bibp = 4,4′-bis(1-imidazolyl)biphenyl and 4,4′-bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine). Complex 1 displays a dinuclear structure. Both 2 and 3 display infinite 1D ladder-like chains. 2 shows a doubly Dcph-bridged Co-Dcph-Co ladder-like chain, while 3 features an infinite tubular-like geometry with [Co(Dcph)2Co] loops. 4, 5 and 8 exhibit the similar 2D grid-like layer structures with (44)-sql networks. 6 displays a 2D square layer constructed by tetranuclear [Co4(OOC)4] building units and 4,4′-bibp ligands. 7 exhibits a (4,4) net with the Schlafli symbol of (4·4). In addition, the photoluminescence properties of 5, 7 and 8 have been investigated in the solid state at room temperature.
