Abstract A numerical simulation of natural convection heat transfer from annular elliptical finned tubes was conducted. A parametric study was also carried out to explain the effect of fin shape change from circular to elliptical on the flow field and heat transfer. It was shown that there was an optimum value for the fin aspect ratio (ratio of main diameters) in which heat flux was maximised. Finally, a correlation was proposed to calculate the Nu number for the elliptical fin. This correlation approached the circular fin correlation for the case of equal main diameters. Finally, the optimum aspect ratio was presented graphically.
