Abstract A novel formulation is presented for synthesizing optimal trajectory for interceptor of a hostile maneuvering target under an overbearing set of constraints. The design variables of the optimization problem are formulated in terms of basic control parameters of the pursuer vehicle from which causality relations based on the equations of flight dynamics generate its flight path. The optimization is effected using a variant of the Differential Evolution algorithm. Evolutionary Optimization techniques that from theoretical principles are guaranteed to provide globally optimum solutions, are among the most powerful tools to achieve such optimal trajectories. The synthesized optimal solutions when compared with extant solutions achieved using alternate optimization techniques manifest this fact.
