Abstract Smart manufacturing requires the collection of information from multiple intelligent devices, consolidating the information into key performance indicators, and making these KPIs available, in realtime to human and automated decision makers. The ISO 22400 standard defines a formal method for documenting KPIs, documenting the expected use, the formulas, and audience, and timing. However, it does not specify how the information should actually be exchanged. MESA International, a worldwide not-for-profit community of manufacturing companies, information technology suppliers, system integrators, consulting service providers, analysts, editors, academics and students, developed KPI-ML, an XML implementation of the ISO 22400 standard that is currently being used to document and exchange KPI information. KPI-ML extends the ISO 22400 data exchange to include information critical to the understanding of the KPI, including the values used in calculating the KPI, the time range the KPI covers, and the scope of equipment the KPI covers. The use of KPI-ML is described and the extensions added to support robust and complete KPI exchanges are discussed in the paper.
