Abstract This paper presents a robust decentralized fixed order wide area damping controller to damp low frequency oscillation in interconnected power systems. The proposed H∞ approach is robust with respect to parametric and dynamic uncertainty. Dynamic uncertainty comes from different system operating points and varying grid topologies. Wide-area control signals have communication links which cause time delay as parametric uncertainty. This H∞ controller is based on loop shaping. The degree of controller is defined by the user. The performance of the controller has been tested on two-areas, four machines system under different uncertainties.
