Abstract The advance of computer technology has made the new multi-CPU/core parallel hardware architecture widely available. This new architecture has also posted an unusual challenge for the power system simulation software developer to take full advantage of the advance. A new high-performance parallel processing approach for power system online analysis is introduced. Functional programming and Monad software design pattern is used in the new approach. A parallel contingency analysis software was developed based on the approach. An N-1 contingency analysis scan of a large-scale power network (40K+ buses) could be achieved in less than half seconds with the developed software running on a mid-range server machine with a total of 40 cores.
