Abstract It is shown that the energy–equalization interpretation of power factor improvement in linear and time–invariant systems is obscured by the presence of non–reciprocal elements, such as gyrators. This raises the theoretical question: if gyrators can absorb reactive power, can they contribute to power factor improvement without the addition of energy storing elements? The answer to this question is in the affirmative and a proof of concept is provided in which the reactive power is ‘juggled’ between two identical loads via a multi–port gyrator.
