Abstract The experiment and simulation for cruciform welded joint was investigated. The weld toe geometry parameters were measured and analyzed. The multiple cracks initiation sites and timing were determined. Fatigue test was conducted and the fatigue fracture with obvious beach marks was obtained. The initiation, coalescence and propagation behaviors of the multiple cracks were investigated by reconstruction technology. The mechanics of multiple cracks initiation and its asynchronous characteristic were analyzed and the effect of the weld toe geometry on multiple cracks behaviors were discussed. Two kind of simulations for multiple cracks inserting simultaneously and asynchronously were conducted respectively.
