Abstract A mesoporous TiN structure with high surface area and excellent electrical conductivity was fabricated for application as a catalyst support in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Pt nanoparticles were then uniformly deposited on the TiN porous support by wet chemical reduction. The performances of PEMFC using Pt@TiN electrodes were evaluated by a single cell test station. The membrane electrode assembly using Pt@TiN for both anode and cathode exhibited 70%–120% higher specific power densities than that of commercial E-Tek due to higher electrical conductivity and porosity of the catalyst support and higher Pt utilization efficiency.
