The objective of the present work is to compare two different models aiming at numerically reproducing Adiabatic Shear Banding (ASB) assisted failure. ASB is herein considered as a deterioration mechanism whose consequences in the material are described via an internal damage variable. The first model called the (1-D) type model is engineering oriented and uses a simple scalar damage variable. The second approach which is physics motivated called the D type model, uses a second order tensor damage variable taking into account the anisotropy induced by the ASB. The performances of the two models to reproduce ASB driven material deterioration are evaluated considering the dynamic shear loading of a hat shaped structure (HSS) within a complete calibration procedure. It is shown that the (1-D) type model considered is not able to satisfy the calibration procedure and that the ASB induced failure requires an advanced modelling as done in the D type model.
