Abstract Protective properties of perforated plates made of modern ultra-high hardness nanostructured bainitic steel were presented in this article. The ballistic tests and the finite element modelling of the impact phenomenon were included. The 7.62 mm × 54R B-32 API and the 7.62 mm × 39 API BZ projectiles were used in the analyses. Results of both experimental and numerical studies indicated that appropriately designed holes pattern can reduce the weight of the armour by up to 40% compared to the monolithic plates of the same protection capability. A small difference between the simulations outcomes and the experimental observations confirmed that the developed numerical model allowed correct representation of the analysed phenomenon. The finite element modelling together with the developed probabilistic model of optimization of holes distribution constitute a fast, robust and effective tool that can be used in parametric studies to maximize the efficiency of perforated armour systems.
