Abstract The optical properties of six ionic liquids, modified with 1-buthyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cations, to form a bi-ionic liquid, was determined by the z-scan technique, revealing a negative nonlinear refractive index, which can be tailored, to some extent, by the composition of the liquid.
