Abstract An optimized method is employed for measuring the phase retardation of wave plate based on normalized polarization modulation technique. Using the zero-order quartz quarter wave plate as the testing sample, the main factors that influence the measuring accuracy were proposed and analyzed. Optimized procedure for compensating the errors was also developed which showed excellent accordance to the theoretical calculation result. We believe that the method reported in this paper may shed light on the fast and accurate measurement of the wave plate.
