Abstract Theoretically we have discussed optimization of the optical limiting character of material as a function of spectroscopic parameters. The population dynamics are discussed with rate equation method and are analytically solved under steady state condition by considering 10 ns laser pulses as interacting light. The optical limiting character can be increased by using the combination of single and multi-photon absorption. This kind of combination can also facilitate the material to make either as the saturable absorber or reverse saturable absorber by tuning the spectroscopic parameters (life times and absorption cross-sections). Estimation of spectroscopic parameters is discussed under single beam transmittance.
