Abstract In this work, we propose two approaches to obtain a multi-band metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) in the THz region. The first one is based on the near-field coupling between bright and dark resonators in the structure of MPA. A dark resonance is excited by the near-field of bright resonance and, then, interference between these resonances happens, giving a dual-band absorption. For the next step, the second approach is applied by creating defects in MPA structure. Due to the existence of defects, an additional perfect absorption resonance appears next to the second resonance. Our work might contribute another way to create future THz devices using multi-band MPA.
