Abstract In this paper, we present an effective approach to decompose an image into its cartoon part and texture part without losing edge information. The cartoon and texture parts of an image have their own importance in various applications like medical imaging and image segmentation, etc. Although image decomposition is a widely explored area and a number of approaches are available in the literature, but most of these methods are unable to preserve the edge information effectively. The proposed method is able to deal with this drawback. The proposed method involves two simple steps texture detection followed by smoothing. We demonstrate the experimental results with some state-of-the-art methods to show the efficiency of the proposed approach.
