Abstract An orange-red phosphor Eu3+ doped SrBi2B2O7 is prepared using a conventional high temperature solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure and luminescence properties of SrBi2B2O7: Eu3+are investigated. The excitation and emission spectra indicate that this as-prepared phosphor can be effectively excited by near ultraviolet 394 nm, and exhibit bright yellow and red emission centered at 589 nm and 614 nm corresponding to the 5D0-7F1 and 5D0-7F2transition. 29 mol.% of Eu3+ is shown to be optimal. The concentration quenching mechanism can be interpreted by the dipole-quadrupole interaction of Eu3+ ions. Good orange-red emissions with the CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.527, 0.343) can be achieved. An orange-red emission LED is made by coating SrBi1.71B2O7: 0.29 Eu3+phosphor on a NUV (390–400 nm) chip. Our results show that SrBi1.71B2O7: 0.29 Eu3+ is a kind of potential orange-red phosphor.
