Abstract The effect of increasing the Nd2O3 concentration and the electron beam irradiation on optical properties on Nd3+ doped chlorophosphite glasses have been investigated for the compositions (50-x) P2O5-30CaCl2-20NaCl-xNd2O3 where x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.3, 1.5 and 2.0 mol% and electron radiation energy 10 MeV. Absorption, reflection and FTIR spectra of samples before and after electron irradiation have been measured at room temperature. The optical band gaps, width of tail (Urbach parameter), the extinction coefficient and the refractive index of samples have been determined. The experiments and calculations show that electron beam irradiation creates defects and color centers in glass and these change some optical parameters.
