Abstract This study used plane wave expansion method to numerically calculate the photonic band structure for transverse magnetic polarization in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal with a linear defect. We consider a 2D hexagonal lattice comprising infinite rods of GaAs with a triangular cross section embedded in air background. Results show the existence of defective bands inside the photonic band gaps, which exhibit a greater confinement for small wave vector values in the propagation direction of the electromagnetic radiation.
