Abstract CoAl2O4:Ce and Mn codoped CoAl2O4:Ce phosphor was successfully synthesized using a novel wet chemical method. The Ce ion or Ce and Mn ions doping CoAl2O4 enhanced the photoluminescence properties of CoAl2O4 and did not change the cubic CoAl2O4 of the host. However, the blue color (b* value) decreased with the increasing variety of doped ions. The increase of different doped ions leads to the decrease of particle size of aluminate and the inhibition of particle agglomeration. Photoluminescence spectra showed two obvious emission peaks at 372 nm and 470 nm with excitation wavelength of 270 nm. The improvement of photoluminescence performance of Ce and Mn co-doped CoAl2O4 is not caused by energy transfer between Ce4+ and Mn4+, but by surface defects or impurity defects.
