Abstract Mean intensity of the lowest order Bessel-Gaussian beams with phase singularities is simulated in a weak turbulence propagation environment. The change of mean intensity variation against the propagation parameters and the source beam parameters is studied by using computer code of laser beam propagating in atmosphere. From the simulation of receiver intensity graphs, it is seen that the central hole and the dark ring of the lowest order Bessel-Gaussian beam with two light rings are gradually filled. The intensity of the inner ring decreases with the increase of the propagation distance or the turbulence strength. The inner ring is submerges, simultaneously the outer ring is lifted higher. Finally, the beam will transform into a well-like single light ring beam. The phase singularity imposed on the lowest order Bessel-Gaussian beam is a robust quantity that can be transmitted over significant distance without loss. In addition, the beam with longer wavelength, wider beam width or larger topological charge is less affected by the turbulence.
