Abstract In this paper, the dynamics of discrete optical phonon solitons is investigated in an array of coupled phonon cavities. The gain of each cavity is induced by pumping a nitrogen-vacancy defect. And we can control the saturable nonlinear effects by adjusting the intensity of external field. In the case of weak nonlinear loss, the bright and dark phonon solitons with analytical expression are obtained and the solitons are stable. By introducing a nontrivial phase for photons tunneling between adjacent cavities, a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived in the continuum limit and we can also obtain Ginzburg-Landau solitons solution in suitable parameter range.
