Abstract On the basis of the scattering potential expanded in a series containing the Gaussian modes with different parameters as the model of a flat-topped light beam, we investigate the scattering of a polychromatic plane light wave by a rotational anisotropic particle, which has a semi-soft boundary. The analytical formula for the spectrum of the scattered field is derived. The phenomena of spectral shift and spectral switch of the scattered field during the rotation of the scatterer are illustrated. The influence of the summation index in the scattering potential function on the appearance of spectral switch is discussed.
