Abstract An optimization method was proposed to select the peak wavelengths of LED chips for correlated color temperature (CCT) tunable three-chip LED light sources based on the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) 2017 color fidelity index (Rf). The results indicate that the optimized peak wavelengths of three LED chips, i.e., 460 nm, 536 nm, and 609 nm, can achieve high color fidelity across the CCT range from 2700 K to 6500 K. Accordingly, three practical LED chips were chosen to realize the three-chip LED light source. The three-chip LED source can achieve the CIE Rf scores of around 80 in a wide range of CCTs, validating the effectiveness of the optimized peak wavelengths. The proposed optimization method can apply to other white-light LEDs for higher color fidelity.
