Abstract A 500 kHz burst-mode YVO4/Nd:YVO41064 nm laser oscillator with a burst duration of 1 ms and a burst energy of 45.0 mJ was presented. The acousto-optically Q-switched frequency could be varied from 10 kHz to 500 kHz, resulting in 10–500 sub-pulses per burst. At the pulse repetition rate of 500 kHz, the maximum single pulse energy reached 90.0 μJ with a pulse width of 37.8 ns, corresponding to a peak power of 2.4 kW. The beam quality factor of burst-mode laser at 500 kHz was measured to be M2=1.6. The burst-mode YVO4/Nd:YVO4laser could be acted as a master oscillator for further power scaling.
